What is a Martini?
The Martini is known as one of the most classic, sophisticated cocktails in the world.
Made up of three ingredients: gin, dry vermouth, and bitters, served neat in a martini glass, the classic Martini remains a staple at bars around the world.
Who invented the Martini?
There are a few tales of where the Martini originated. New York sources claim that the Martini was created by a bartender at the Knickerbocker Hotel. Martini di Arma di Taggia, was claimed to have created the Martini for John B. Rockerfeller.
Other sources claim that the cocktail evolved from a cocktail called the Martinez served in the 1860s at the Occidental Hotel in San Fransisco, which people drank before taking a ferry to Martinez, CA.
What made Martinis popular?
Martinis became popular during Prohibition in the USA (1920-1933), as illegal gin was manufactured the most.
